Design & Engineering

Our experienced team of engineers will partner with you from the start of material selection, part configuration and processing. We engage Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) and focus on quickly delivering functional prototypes. We partner with you to help you determine the best design for the job.

Prototype

Being vertically integrated with a comprehensive machine shop and assembly capabilities allows us to quickly produce functional prototypes to customer defined needs. Having all operations under one roof gives us the flexibility to move and respond quickly. Our footprint and cost profile provide us with the ability to create value for our customers at competitive and fair prices.

Design for Manufacturing (DFM)

Once a design has been selected, we engage Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (PFMEA) to ensure the product is robust and the manufacturing process is repeatable with reliable, consistent results. We utilize the principles of Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ) and Process Qualification (PQ) to give our customers and our team peace of mind that we have a high degree of assurance our manufacturing process will consistently yield a product of predetermined quality.

Contract Manufacturing (CMO)

With our vertically integrated operation we have multiple capabilities under one roof to produce metal components and manage the outsourcing of other required sub-components. Our world class assembly operations deliver complex sub-assemblies and complete devices. Today we produce medical devices designed by our engineers as well as those designed entirely by our customers. We are committed to creating value for our customers.

Instrument Technology, Inc. (ITI) is a privately owned U.S. Manufacturing company located in our 30,000 square foot facility in Westfield, Massachusetts, USA. A vertically integrated operation and an FDA registered facility, ITI has design, manufacturing, assembly, quality control, and support services all located under one roof. This gives us the resources and flexibility to move quickly and flex to our customers’ needs.

Engineering & Design

ITI’s experienced design and manufacturing engineering team can take a project from concept to prototype to production ready design. Our team is experienced in all of the design process tools including DFMEA, PFMEA, IQ, OQ, and PQ. We use the most modern Solidworks CAD system. For CAM programming we have several experienced programmers using Mastercam. We also utilize tools like MiniTab for statistical analysis. Our in house lab allows the engineering team to make our own test rigs.

Machine Shop

ITI is a full-service machine shop. With our modern CNC milling (up to 5 axis) and CNC turning (with live tooling) capabilities we can produce complex precision machined parts. We have Matsuura, Fanuc Robodrill, and Doosan vertical machining centers that can accommodate up to a 12”. We have Nakamura and Doosan CNC turning centers to turn part to tolerances as tight as .0002 inches. We work with all types of metals and plastics.
ITI has strong relationship with its supply chain partners for any special processes that may need performed to produce a complete part.

Assembly

ITI performs many types of assembly from the basic mechanical assembly to electro-mechanical assembly to bonding to create plastic tubes with metal braid melted into them and optical assembly. Our assembled products are used worldwide in medical endoscopes. We have a room dedicated to soldering complete with ventilation to remove the fumes and smoke. To produce the metal braid reinforced tubes we have two large ovens that can handle a part over 4 feet long. For the electrical we use our ESD benches. For the mechanical assembly and bonding we have benches that are outfitted with all of the necessary tools including microscopes for the precision assembly. Our assemblies can have as few 5 detail parts and as many as 150 detail parts.

Quality

ITI is known for its high quality products, whether our microborescopes or a customer’s endoscope. We are certified to ISO9001:2015, ISO13485, and AS9100. We have a dedicated quality lab with a large range of micrometers, calipers, thread gages, optical comparators, light intensity gages, optical gages, and other purpose built gages.
We are capable of performing much of the mechanical testing that is required in the medical and aerospace industries. Our engineers have designed test equipment for delamination testing, bending force measurement, torque measurement, crush resistance, and pull testing.

We are a U.S. Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) as certified by the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs. Co-owners Joe Dorrian and JJ Shields are graduates of the United States Naval Academy. Ownership believes strongly in investing in our people and challenges employees while providing them with the tools and support to grow.

ITI has a diverse mix of experience, including 40+ year veterans who provide product and manufacturing expertise and relational stability to newer team players. Being vertically integrated, our departments include Sales & Marketing, Administrative & Finance, Engineering and R&D, Quality Assurance and Operations (which includes Machine Shop and Assembly).

ITI is a vertically integrated one-stop shop for large and small customers. our 30,000 ft^2 facility in Westfield, Massachusetts is located a 40 minute drive to the north of Bradley International Airport in Hartford County, Connecticut. A FDA registered facility, under a single roof we have design and research, machine shop, assembly and quality assurance. Our vertical integration gives us tremendous flexibility in meeting customer needs quickly and efficiently helping our customers reduce time to market.
